Common questions

How do you calculate running pace?

Divide your finish time by the distance. A 50:00 10K is 50 minutes over 10 km, so 5:00 per km, or 8:03 per mile (10 km is 6.21 miles). To go the other way, multiply your pace by the distance.

What is a good running pace?

It depends on the distance, your age and gender. In the US race results we track, the median 5K finisher averages about 11 to 12 minutes per mile, since many run-walk, while the median marathoner averages under 10. Our finish-time pages show where any time places by age.

Should I run even splits?

For most runners, yes: an even pace, or a slightly faster second half, uses your energy best. Starting too fast is the most common way to miss a goal, especially in the marathon.
